LAST MONTH: Last month was business as usual plus December craziness. All that being said, MUSREV saw a decent amount of traffic. One feature that seemed to draw quite a bit of interest was the video: "Ebony and Ivy League", a 30 sec. short by Lucas. Check: http://www.themusicalrevolution.com/weblog/promotion/index.html

IMPORTANT!: HAPPY NEW YEAR! 2009 is looking to be a landmark year for yours truly (Me :D). That being said, I strongly hope that it will be a landmark year for the revolution as well. So. What I propose is a slight change of attitude. As the new website takes form, it would be nice if the focus shifted more to the positive - enjoying/supporting/creating NEW/great music. We (TheMusicalRevolution) are the ones who can make this happen. Thanks for sharing with us - please continue to do so :D

NEWS: The Recording Industry stateside has decided to forsake their plan of sue first and ask questions later. They have decided to take the high road and coerce ISPs to rat us out instead :S.. No more Warner Music videos on YouTube. Is that bad news?.. In a race to see who can become irrevelant first, Myspace has ditched "Project Playlist" (playlist sharing application) due to pressure from the RIAA - Facebook to follow... Chris Anderson wrote a book outlining how the music industry could benefit from today's technology and.. now a bunch of negative nelly blowhards are punching holes in his optimism and gloating like pissed off little spoiled brats who aren't getting their own way.. boo hoo...

PROPAGANDA: Wanna sell your used guitars for $100,000? Just smash 'em up, duct tape 'em, sell out music, then shoot yourself.. Too late, Kurt Cobain beat you to it (OH NO HE DIDN'T! :O)... Eminem is going to get out of releasing his next album "Relapse" me thinks. The second single is now all over the internet and it ain't even finished yet! I say he just throws a snare down and some freestyles, skips the promo BS and goes straight to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame already ;).. So. This is hI-larious! 2008: Coldplay release a song entitled, "Viva la Vida". The indy band, The Creaking Boards immediately accuse them of ripping off their song, "The Songs I Didn't Write." Then Joe Satriani accuses Chris Martin's crew of ripping off his 2004 song, "If I Could Fly." But it turns out that they all could be ripping off music from The Legend of Zelda??? Who knows? And. Metallica is Guitar Hero bound! Think that I just may download that game :O..

You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch by Dr. Seuss

You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch. You really are a heel.
You're as cuddly as a cactus, you're as charming as an eel. Mr. Grinch.

You're a bad banana with a greasy black peel.

You're a monster, Mr. Grinch. Your heart's an empty hole.
Your brain is full of spiders, you've got garlic in your soul. Mr. Grinch.

I wouldn't touch you, with a thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole.

You're a vile one, Mr. Grinch. You have termites in your smile.
You have all the tender sweetness of a seasick crocodile. Mr. Grinch.

Given the choice between the two of you I'd take the seasick crocodile.

You're a foul one, Mr. Grinch. You're a nasty, wasty skunk.
Your heart is full of unwashed socks. Your soul is full of gunk. Mr. Grinch.

The three words that best describe you are, and I quote: "Stink. Stank. Stunk."

You're a rotter, Mr. Grinch. You're the king of sinful sots.
Your heart's a dead tomato splot with moldy purple spots, Mr. Grinch.

Your soul is an appalling dump heap overflowing with the most disgraceful assortment of deplorable rubbish imaginable; mangled up in tangled up knots.

You nauseate me, Mr. Grinch. With a nauseaus super-naus.
You're a crooked jerky jockey and you drive a crooked horse. Mr. Grinch.

You're a three-decker sauerkraut and toadstool sandwich with arsenic sauce.

LAST MONTH: http://www.themusicalrevolution.com/weblog/fellow_revolutionaries/index.html - Check in here for Torontonian poet/lyricist OmahaRisinG. The bard has recently been published, meaning we can all enjoy his talents. We just have to find our way to the bookstore "This Ain't The Rosedale Library" in Kensington Market which may be difficult if you live in say... anywhere but Toronto, Canada :S But rest assured, it's a fantasTic read and worth the trip :D

IMPORTANT!: Check out one of Toronto's finest spinner/selectors still thriving after over a decade - deejayscootz: The byline reads: Music to move your mind, body and soul. Renowned for working across the world in top restaurants, clubs and events, deejayscootz is a leading participant in the Toronto underground music scene. deejayscootz creates. He can currently be experienced at the Rivoli Pool Hall (http://www.rivoli.ca) Saturday Nights, Bar Italia (http://www.bar-italia.ca/) Friday Nights, and on the FM radio airwaves (92.7 Trent Radio beatzFM). http://www.trentu.ca/org/trentradio/
Hailed by many to be one of Toronto's top "selectors," deejayscootz's music titles run as deep in flavor as they do in quality - incorporating Jazz, Sweet 60's Soul, 70's R&B, Punk, Funk, Disco, Dance, Hip-Hop, Roots, Rock, Conscious Reggae, AFRO, a diverse array of Electronic music that includes Mancunian, Minimal German, Electro, Tech, Classic Deep House, Drum & Bass, and Jazz beats.
A leading participant in the Toronto above and underground music scene, deejayscootz is a founding member of the experimental sound collective; beatzMASSIVE*, a brother in Marcellus-Bentley multi-media productions, and he promotes Canadian talent in the global marketplace through his Seven C-s imprint.
For deejayscootz music: http://www.deejayscootz.ca

NEWS: A Harvard Law Prof is taking on the RIAA, stating that suing downloaders is unconstitutional. I think the dude's name is Superman :D?.. Looks like Berklee will be setting up shop in Valencia, Spain. I wonder if Jack Black will be teaching at the new school of rock... The latest Chinese censorship news: G'nR is the latest to piss of officials, which leads me to ask, when did China join in the American Propeganda Machine?.. And.. Bono has launched (RED)WIRE . For a fiver a month, you can get music from all of your fave superstars :S http://www.redwire.com/ Proceeds go to African AIDS/Malaria relief.

PROPAGANDA: I'm wondering if I should be chatting up Kanye or not. Is dood a musician or a tabloid stooge? Lately I think the latter; assaulting paparazzi - denouncing music award shows; second verse same as the first!.. Madonna and Guy have made it official - their joint business venture, ahem, I mean marriage is officially over.. and nobody mentions the kids... Conspiracy theorists check this! The Roots announce their retirement from touring -- The Roots end up in an ALMOST fatal bus crash?? HUH?? LOL!.. BTW. New U2 album due out January -- support Bono RED! ;)

It hasn't revolutionized music but it sure is fun to play!
The kazoo as we know it today, was invented in the 1840s by two men in Macon, Georgia named Alabama Vest and Thaddeus Von Clegg. A small factory in western New York began mass producing the instrument in 1912, and the kazoo began to enjoy widespread popularity especially with country string bands and early jazz ensembles. LAST MONTH: The big draw, hitswise, last month was an interview done by fellow revolutionary, Lydia. It just so turns out that she interviewed the very artists we featured the previous month and in the Oct. newsletter, The Hometown Hecklers. To read the interview and find out why it drew over 1000 hits one day check:
http://www.themusicalrevolution.com/weblog/fellow_revolutionaries/index.html
You'll laugh, cry, wonder what the fuss is about??? LOL!

IMPORTANT!: So it turns out that I'm finally recording that album of tracks that I always fancied I'd record. It's a collection of my favorite compositions from the last 15 years -- all inspired and all still holding great meaning to me. I've rewritten, preproduced, demoed, am tracking, producing, engineering and publishing everything myself. The only job that I will outsource is the mastering. All this said, it turns out that I'm not as good as I thought I was. It turns out that creating music IS 90% ego. I'm still excited to finish and show what I've accomplished to the world but I'm just not as sure as I once was... :S

NEWS: Last month, the UN honoured Jay-Z for his philanthropic efforts. As a plus, Ban Ki-moon also gave the rap mogul his nod for baggin' tha B... Simple Plan have released the single, "Save You" in support of cancer research and a flailing career... In an EXTREMELY tragic case of "be careful what you wish for", Jennifer Hudson lost her mother, brother and nephew in October. Is fame worth the price? And.. The Beatles come to Rock Band with their own brand and own songs. Alright kiddies.. playtime's.. just about to start?..

PROPAGANDA: Man! These jokes write themselves! The Jonas Brothers are about to star in a film titled, "Walter the Farting Dog". Careful boys. Don't overextend yourselves... After 14 years of agony filled waiting, "Chinese Democracy" is set to hit store shelves! Chinese what?.. Jermaine Jackson gave us the scoop folks! The Jackson 5 PLUS Randy PLUS Janet will re-unite!!! Big Tour! Big Music! Big Money! But wait.. Nobody thought to ask Michael - LOL!.. P.S. Michael Jackson turned down the reunion AGAIN! AND. Led Zepplin aren't going anywhere without Robert Plant either. Bagels just don't taste that good without cream cheese :D.. BOO! Happy Halloween!

Lydia:

The Hometown Hecklers are the definitive pret-a-port punk-rock band. They play live often. They jam often, and write songs nearly every week. Tonight they are preparing for a show with local band Bake Sale, and two imports from Manitoba; The Gorgon and The Angry Dragon. Although the band has a break in shows in the coming month, I decided to take time to interview them shortly after their release party. Coping with line-up change, and then the quick success of their album in the midst of non-stop gigs does not seem to faze them. This incarnation (the Hecklers name has been around a while) was formed mid-2007 and only recently enlisted a new drummer. With an album already fresh off the press, "The Heart and Downstroke Foundation", this is one band that works fast.

What did you all think of recording The Heart and Downstroke Foundation? Did you enjoy it?
Josh - Well, you are recording right now, and I enjoy it. The album was pretty much the same.
Matt (laughing) - I wasn't on the album. I was in just before the release party.
Ruggy Ride - I love recording! Paul played drums for the album. We had a friggin' Blast!
KeeKee - Totally love recording! Totally. Some songs were a little tense, a little much. But it was awesome.
Lydia - Of course, it went pretty fast though right?
KK - Yeah, probably the fastest album out of North Bay lately.
RR - No man, it was like...
KK - Four months?
RR - Five months? Yeah, that's fast I guess.
KK - Super fast.

Me - I understand you are already sold out of discs... is that true?
RR - We sold out at the release party!
KK - Yeah, we sold out pretty fast, got more printed.

Russell "Ruggy Ride" Collins and Kelly "Kee-Kee" Allan have been core members of The Hometown Hecklers since the 2007 revival which originally included Paul Rothwell, of Sobriety's Rejects fame. Josh "Lambo" Lambert was added as rhythm guitarist in January 2008 and the latest addition Matt Dent joined recently to replace Paul on drums.

The Hecklers have rotated drummers quite a bit since Paul. Have all my favorite drummers in town jammed with you?
RR - Nah, we have only had Chucky, Paul, Kevin, and now Matt.
Josh - I played for one show, we jammed a couple times with me on drums, but yeah, we jammed with alternates sometimes.
KK - Yeah, and Sterling and Scott filled in too.
RR - Just for jams though. Only four official drummers, I think. And now Matt!
Lydia - Yes, Matt, how many live shows have you been at now?
Matt - Rothfest, the CD Release Party, the Can Change Festival, October 3rd...
Josh - Matt's first show was Rothfest
RR - Yeah, our last show with Kevin was the Pig Roast.
Matt - Yeah, Rothfest was like, a week after the NPR Pig Roast.

Non Partisan Records is a loose artists co-operative formed by members of OMOS, 24 Sussex and Power-Stance Merchandise who regularly organize shows Lately, most shows are private affairs as there is trouble securing venues in North Bay. With luck, NPR is able to hold two shows a month with a full line at the merch booth with cd's, shirts and stickers for most of the bands they support.

Speaking geek for a minute, what make and model do you all play?
RR - I have an Ibanez SG style, it's like a Gibson knock off or whatever But Kel bought me it so I love it.
KK - Ernie Ball style Jay Turser and I love it and his name is Jimmy The Con!
RR - What did I name mine? I forget!
Matt - I play... um... drums!
Kel - Druggys rum kit!
Lydia - Yeah, the slut kit, eh?
Josh - It's a Taye, good Canadian company actually...
Matt - Yup, it's a Taye. Yes, it's a great kit really.
Josh - right now, I use the Tele, which is a great guitar, I like playing that. Not using my other guitar
Matt - oh, what kind is that?
Josh - I have no idea. B? It has a B on it, weirdest guitar ever.

I have seen Matt, Josh and Ruggy all play different instruments, so what does everyone play?
Josh - I started on drums but no one in the band I was in wanted to sing, so I figured I would just do it. The first tune I learned on drums was Rockin' in the Free World!
Matt - I play drums, bass and guitar
Lydia - Formal training on any, or all self taught?
Matt - Yup, all self taught.
Kel - I have been playing bass a year and a bit.
Lydia - You dabbled in guitar and have been singing forever...
Kel - Yeah, choral, country and gospel singing. Guitar... not so much.
Ruggy - Guitar, Bass, Drums... I taught myself. I had a few guitar lessons but...
Matt and Josh (laughing) - but what?
Ruggy - But it sucked! He was a nice guy though...

The Hometown Hecklers have a massive choice of material for set-lists. Each show sounds fresh when coupled with the bands love of playing off one another. There has been a shift in songwriting in the last few months, as Kelly and Lambert are beginning to flesh out songs they have written. There is a unique sound to the Hecklers as it is, so the new material fits into the current roster seamlessly - just as the personalities of the band members mesh particularly well.

RR - So what did you think of Shimmy Bop?
Lydia - I liked it, I didn't recall it being played at your last show - You have a lot of songs, don't you?
RR - At least enough for an EP probably enough for an album in a month.
KK (laughing) - Or tomorrow! We want an album out with Matt pretty bad!
Matt - Definitely!

Lydia - Is there anything you would like to add before we head for beer and wings? Future Plans?
RR - I hate that new Kid Rock song.
Josh - Timmins perhaps, I want to do a show in Timmins pretty bad... you see, 'cause it's close to home. But it's hard to play shows there 'cause there's a lack of interest. It's a hip-hop town...
RR - I thought it was an AC/DC town?
KK - No, North Bay is an AC/DC town. We proved that one night.
Matt - More shows, recording...
KK - I really want to hit Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec city. Recording.
RR - More shows. More songs.
For a look at those first newsletters, check: http://www.themusicalrevolution.com/weblog/presite_newsletters/index.html
A year later we launched the website. Today we are over 170 strong and enjoy upwards of 2000 hits daily :D Future plans include a more user friendly interface, an online radio station and an online recording company. Hey, I live this every day -- Thanks for checking in and being part. BIG Love.

NEWS: Once every election cycle, Rage Against the Machine reunite, do a tour and get shut down by the Po-lice.. ahh tradition... See Jack (White) write Bond theme. See Coke use it in their ad campaign. See Jack get $. See Jack bitch about the ad. See Jack give the $ back.. JK... NYC has commissioned Philip Glass to write an operatic tribute to Walt Disney. Wouldn't it have been funny if Beethoven would have composed a symphony in memory of Jim Henson?.. Feist's latest Canadian tour will be one for the people. All proceeds from her merch will go to charity. And.. I got nothin'. That's pretty cool...

PROPAGANDA: Going once.. Going twice.. SOLD! The Stone's famous lips logo has been auctioned off to the highest bidder. Keith's next... Seems that Kanye West recently got in trouble for punching up some paparazzi. What's this world coming to when a corporate rap star can't beat on his boyfriend?.. Looks like Eminem's ma is finally getting her own back. Bitch gone wild! She's writing a tell all book about young Marshall and promises to include lots of naked baby bath pics and a video of Slim singing "Someone's in the Kitchen with Dinah"... Ex Blink drummer Travis and DJ AM almost died in a plane crash this past month. Randy Rhodes, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Big Bopper, Richie Valens, Buddy Holly...
