THEMUSICALREVOLUTION.COM THIS MONTH: This month we'd like to send out big love to Najihah, Omaha and Chase. We're happy to acknowledge the return of fine poetry to the site. September has seen a resurgence of the poetic with the contributions of our friend Christine. Check: http://www.themusicalrevolution.com/weblog/freestylelyricspoetry/index.html
for a couple of her pieces. Next month Christine may just have some company. Fellow revolutionary, Omaha has promised to offer up a few of his masterpieces :) Big News! SOCAN (Canada's society of composers, authors and music publishers) has decided to offer up a hefty cash prize to two of ten independent artists for their work. We even get to help decide who receives this bursary. Check:
http://www.themusicalrevolution.com/weblog/promotion/index.html
The songs are great! Hope you enjoy.

EDITORIAL:

So. first off - Happy Anniversary Revolutionaries. 3 long years of putting up with my rambling and it looks as if tha shit's only getting stronger! Now if I can only get the new site up and running... :D

Speaking of me - LOL! This past month, a dear friend of mine happened to send me a couple of pics. These pics not only brought back a past that seems like another lifetime ago, but they served to remind me of why I got into this revolution thang in the first place.

Check these pics:

Or this song: 15 Min. Marathon

For those who remember "Strange Bargain", an independent band devoted to pushing the envelope, you already know. For all the rest - figure this: We were kids who did it. We did the school. We made our parents "proud". We wanted to make everyone happy.

But.

Bargain was OUR offering. In hindsight, I doubt that many really "understood" what all the noise was about. Why? Why the chest hair; the nudity? Why the jumpin' around, the yelling, the falling on our asses? Why the tandem cocks or the boobies? Why the hell did the ENTIRE audience have to take the stage? Why???

The answer. The Next Level. We knew that we could write "pretty" songs. We knew that we could stay in tune and sing everything. We knew that we could practice hard and impress critics with our skills. We'd been doing it since birth. Anyone could with enough time spent. But - it's all been done.

So, today, Mr. Selbie holds it down teaching high school. Mr. Benny is playing and singing in a touring "rock" band with a manager, label and everything. I just bought a house. I'm settling down with the best partner anyone could ever ask for. We're back to making people happy.

But.

Long live the Strange Bargain's of the world.

Thanks Pauls.
Strange Love All,
i220

MUSIC NEWS:

1. MINERS REQUEST FOO FIGHTERS IN THEIR TIME OF DISTRESS: Workers trapped in an Australian mine for two weeks requested that Dave Grohl's band be downloaded onto Mp3 players for them. In response, the Foos have invited the two of them out for "refreshments" when they tour down under this month.

2. U2 AND GREEN DAY RECORD SINGLE IN AID OF NEW ORLEANS MUSIC: The two world famous rock acts have collaborated together with producer Rick Rubin on a cover of "The Saints Are Coming," originally by the Scottish punk band The Skids. All proceeds from the single will go to The Edge's charity, "Music Rising" which is dedicated to buying instruments for musicians devistated by Hurricane Katrina. More Info: http://www.musicrising.org/

3. MYSPACE LOOKS TO BECOME A MUSIC RETAILER: The social-networking site which boasts over 100 million users (3 million musical acts) is looking to get into the game of selling music. It is reported that the bands will be able to set their own price per tune and that songs will be distributed in the mp3 format. http://www.myspace.com/

4. AUSTRALIAN MUSIC FESTIVAL FOR BREAST CANCER: The "Legs 11" Concert which features acts such as Tim Rogers & Tex Perkins, Sarah Blasko, Little Birdy and many more will be held at Royal Botanical Gardens in Sydney on Fri.Oct.27/06. More info @: http://www.legseleven.com.au

5. JLO AND MARC ANTHONY PERFORM ON SONG FOR PEACE: The song 'One Day', also featuring EVE, Chris Brown, Bone Thugs and Harmony, Mario, Floetry, Lyfe Jennings, Cassidy and Sean Paul - produced by Swizz Beatz - is being recorded for the 25 Anniversary of the United Nations International Day of Peace. The single is set for release on December 9/06, the day of the International Peace Concert, to be held in Rome.

6. BEDOUIN SOUND CLASH PERFORM AT RALLY FOR DAFUR: On Sun.Sep.17/06 artists and activists united in Toronto, Canada to show support for the war-torn African region. It has been suggested that the UN should take action when African Union peacekeepers leave the area by the end of September.

7. RECORD LABELS HAVE OPPOSING VIEWS ON YOUTUBE.COM: While top Warner Bros. acts such as Green Day look to release material on the popular video webspot, Univeral music has damned tha "Tube" by exclaiming that the site "owes us tens of millions of dollars." (Universal Records chairman) Check: http://www.youtube.com/

8. WHO CARES?: 50 BUSTED! Apparently, when pulled over in New York City he refused to produce a driver's licence, was driving without insurance, driving without licence plates and making an unsafe lane change. It has also been reported that he had 3 kidnapped 8 year old Filipino Nike workers in the back seat, one of whom was smoking crack while the other two were playing Texas Hold'em in the nude. But, that may be fabrication... John Mayer - what is up cat? Recording a blistering blues album with two of sessiondom's finest = gooood. Dating Jessica "Can't Tuna Fish" Simpson = WTF?.. "Don't Believe Tha Hype"... Whitney Houston files for divorce from Bobby Brown and is immediately spotted shacking up with Pete Doherty.. JK... Britney's.. Baby.. Boy.. Let me guess.. "Blanket"?.. Delana shoulda won! Sexist/racist/fascist/non breast fed long hairs - LOL!.. Eminem to release Mixtape.. about how he haytsz N#@gers. Fuck him!.. Jay Z's retirememnt lasted about as long as my.. What?.. It's cold out... Andrew Lloyd Webber. No. SIR Andrew Lloyd Webber. Playing the reality TV gig? Next thing you know, the vicar at my church will be living in a big old house on a hill with 7 TV's and a Lexus in the drive. Wait a minute... "Nevermind" - 15 years old. Kurt Cobain - still dead... Madonna is the top-grossing female touring artist oF AlL TIME! But, understand this - they didn't keep very accurate records back in Joan or Delilah's days... Linkin Park is killing Nu-Metal. How about they just change the name? I mean "NU". What is that?.. WHAT IS THAT?

No problem brother!

Seeing that Strange Bargain still lives in one of the best live venues blew my mind and made me a very happy camper.

A lot of my fondest memories stem from the existence of Strange Bargain. No need to list them all here! ;)

Biggest LOVE!!!

Genre names such as Indie, Alternative, Pop(ular), Nu(ew) Metal, etc... really BOTHER me!
I much prefer the terms grunge, jazz, hip hop, etc...
These genre names, while still (ex)clusive in a way are much more telling. They describe the sound of the music in some way. They are onomatopoeic as well (had to look tha one up :P).

Defining a sound as alternative, new or popular is just really the industry trying to prevent any other sound from becoming the alternative, popular or new. When I say alternative now, people think of that "Seattle" sound but nothing could be more mainstream at the moment. "Nu Metal" has been around for half a decade at least now - shouldn't it be renamed "Soph Metal" or something? What is Auld Metal; Metallica? What should we call Black Sabbath?

The worst perpetrator is the term "indie". In fact, I blame the "indie" kids for this whole damn genre exclusive name throwing game! "Hey! Here we are listening to talented musicians who can't be bothered to practice. We've got our parents to buy us some really expensive guitars, and recording gear and have thrown a little something together. Now, our friends at college radio are all over the sound because we wealthy college going folk have to stick together. Wait a minute, let's call this sound "indie" - it kinda sounds like it's the short form for "independent" but it ISN'T. Then anyone else who comes along and creates a new type of music but doesn't have all the expensive gear and contacts will be shut out of OUR club." Brilliantly shait!

Why should "indie" kids take the blame? Well, there's no way that the industry could have thought of this idea themselves! They just steal other people's ideas and market them. But. These days it has become their greatest weapon against anything new. Indie kids invented it, Nirvana's ilk popularized it - WE, suffer for it.

"Independent" is a philosophy, a mindset, a lifestyle - not a music genre or anything like that! True independents aren't concerned with genres, album sales or big screen tv videos. They just want to create great music - in whatever vein. And they DO make money. Hard work coupled with talent always does.

Power to the NEW - the ALTERNATIVE - the POPULAR and the INDEPENDENT!
Can't wait to hear what you're gonna sound like next.
