SOCAN:
SOCAN is proud to announce the launch of the ECHO Songwriting Prize and the Prix de la chanson ECHO, which are set to highlight and celebrate the songwriting talents of some of the best independent, up-and-coming Anglophone and Francophone songwriters in Canada.
What it is: The Echo Songwriting Prize is designed to put the spotlight on some of this country?s up-and-coming songwriters who might not otherwise receive recognition for their work at this point in their careers. It's also a unique opportunity for SOCAN to introduce itself to future members. Our members are of the utmost importance to us and we continually look to new initiatives to enhance the services we offer them.
How it works: Two independent panels each made up of eight (8) of the nation's top music community tastemakers, representing various regions of the country and facilitating one another's exposure to a diverse collection of musical genres, nominated a total of 24 songs related to each prize.
Once the nomination process was complete, the panelists reviewed each of the nominated songs and, using a point-value system, determined the five songs for each prize that will be voted on by the public. The public is then able to listen to the songs and vote for their favourite at http://www.socan.ca/
SOCAN invites you to (meet the nominees and) cast your vote for your favourite song by logging onto http://www.socan.ca/

SLAVE DAZE
Poetry by Christine
Chains around my ankles,
But i'm not an animal you see,
You took me from my homeland,
And now i am not free,
My love i see no longer,
I have no reason to sing,
Its hard to love, its hard to laugh,
I'm like a bird with just one wing,
You sold me like cattle,
As if i was imported silk or tea,
I don't even speak your language,
Why do you look down on me?
Now i pick your cotton,
My sister scrubs your feet,
The white man is not my friend,
Just a lazy,lyin', cheat!

BEFORE ITS TOO LATE
POETRY by: christine clarke
soon they'll be gone
we'll need to stand up
we... the youth
are the future
lets not follow in
their footsteps
lets start a revolution
what they're doin'
isn't workin'
we know whats up
we see whats down
they say were free
i disagree
all nations should be one
put down your weapons
drop your guns
greed has replaced peace
indeed
don't care about your neighbor
just the fame
its a shame
whos to blame?
the time will come
rivers dried up
cus' we didn't change
we'll be gone
our families will suffer
not seeing the gifts that
God had made
the gifts we regifted
took and shifted
its time to step up to the plate
change the world in
a positive way
before its too late!!

These are the questions we need to ask people!
THEMUSICALREVOLUTION.COM THIS MONTH: This month we'd like to send out big love to Flying V and Cochise plus recognize these NEW countries to tha fold: United Arab Emirates. 78 countries and counting. This past month (fellow revolutionary) Lydia reviewed the "Warped Tour", Barrie 2006. Click: http://www.themusicalrevolution.com/weblog/reviews/index.html to find out what our resident journalist/music fan thought of bands such as: Motion City Soundtrack, Less Than Jake and Anti-Flag.
EDITORIAL:
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, Bob Dylan has openly denounced modern music. In fact, Mr. Tambourine Man has defined anything recorded in the last twenty years as "atrocious", "nothing" and like "static". The man further adds that modern C.D.s have "no stature" and "sound all over them".
So. What do YOU think? Does Mr. Dylan have a point here? Or. Is this just another rephrasing of the popular "Nothing new since '76" complaint?
Personally, I feel that these comments are just as indicative of a disconnect between music's elite and it's grass roots as they are of a waning enthusiasm for the industry's tendancy to back mediocrity. In laymen's terms, I'm saying that while Bob is still pissed at the suits he's also just getting OLD!
I feel that the real problem here is that you have a bunch of "out of touch" fat cats running an industry that is fueled by the money of 14-25 year olds. And. By "runnin'" I mean to say "RUNNING!" These clowns are strongly influencing the writing, recording, and promotional processes of seemingly all popular music.
To Mr. Bob I say, "To the internet my friend." There is real, unique, artistic music being created and recorded on a daily/hourly basis! It WILL affect you if you are still able to be affected. Look to yoursel(f)ves. Is it that there is nothing new or is it that you are incapeable of accepting all that is new in music into your "stuck in '76" brain?
In an even more "out there" proclamation, I would argue that there are emcees (readily available) on the internet that have much more to say (at least to me) than Dylan ever did. Our world just hasn't caught up yet. Oh yeah... I pushed it there! Respect - both PAST and FUTURE.
Digital Love.

MUSIC NEWS:
1. MADONNA TO HELP RAISE MONEY FOR ORPHANED CHILDREN IN MALAWI: The "not so" material girl has pledged to raise over $3 million for the African nation which is home to an estimated one million orphans.
2. LIMEWIRE SUED BY CONSORTIUM OF WORLD'S LARGEST RECORD LABELS: Universal Music, Sony BMG, EMI and Warner Music Group have all banded together to shut down the popular file-sharing program. The suit seeks $150,000 per song.
3. JAY-Z VS. WORLD WATER CRISIS: Mr. Shawn Carter has joined forces with the UN to raise public awareness of an issue which affects over a billion people worldwide. The rap mogul will be touring nations where people don't have clean water to drink in order to expose this issue to the world's youth.
4. TUPAC SHAKUR SUBJECT OF EDUCATIONAL STUDY: On the tenth anniversary of Pac's death (Sept. 13/06) two UK film institutions will be hosting a 13-day conference which will focus on the man's film carrer, music and effect on popular culture.
5. ISRAELI AND ARAB MUSICIANS JOIN TOGETHER FOR PEACE: On the 16th of August/06, Conductor/Pianist Daniel Barenboim and his orchestra performed Beethoven's Ninth in an event dubbed, "Music Against Violence" in front of close to 6,000 people at Madrid's Plaza Mayor. The orchestra normally boasts 110 musicians from 17 countries including Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Tunisia, Spain, the Netherlands, and Israel but was short members due to the very Israeli/Lebanese conflict they were uniting against.
6. BADLY DRAWN BOY DONATE TOUR PROCEEDS TO OXFAM: One "quid" from each ticket sold for the U.K. band's upcoming campaign will go to the organization which aspires to eliminate poverty worldwide. Check: http://www.badlydrawnboy.co.uk/tour.html for more details.
7. WHO CARES?: This past month, Jumaine Dupri threw a party. The routine shootings happened. 3 people were injured. At some point, you just have to wonder - do thugz hire themselves out for these things? Is it like escorts or clowns? "Thugz For Hire" - We'll shoot up your party, only harm ourselves and get your name in the papers. What the?.. On the equally as stupid tip.. Mr. Michael Scott Axley has been charged for beating Andrew Richardson to death at a Korn concert. Now, I'm not for violence of any kind but maybe just this once we should grant Mr. Richardson's family some alone time with this idiot. I doubt that he'll learn any lessons but it may just have an effect on any other like-minded shitheads. Probably not... Dixie Chicks are learning what it's like to take their act political. Rage, Dylan or Young you're not sweethearts. Better stick to the MOR ballads your fans love so much... Lil' Dumbass - Drugs. Busta - Weapons. These rappers are just like white trash only with "badder" luck :S.. Outkast have released a new album/film soundtrack entitled "Idlewild". Finally some good music to download! LOL!.. Neverland.. Is.. Burning.. Symbolic much?.. "Supernova". The band where the fill in guitarist for Gn'R, the Metallica bassist who brought them to pop radio and the Motley Crue drummer who's made more pornographic headlines as of late than musical ones are already making tour plans. Guys, ain't you forgetting one thing? A singer perhaps... And the mouth rambles on.
