EDITORIAL:

O.K. Say... you're in one of the world's biggest bands. And let's imagine that your best/most creative days are behind you. What are you going to do?

This is a bigger dilemma than one might originally think. These artists have created a lifestyle for themselves and their families that requires a lot of money to maintain. Record labels don't play nice if you aren't producing the numbers. And. Most importantly, these artists don't operate in the black. They are all well in the red to banks and labels alike. If they don't continue to produce, their assets and future earnings will dwindle forcing them into tight spaces that will suddenly make that "iPod" commercial seem mighty appealing :S

So. What to do? Bands like "Red Hot Chili Peppers" or "U2" play nice. They ditch their musically radical ways steer themselves ever more and more closer to the middle of the road where the money is surer and the debtors are more "supportive".

"AC DC" and the "Stones" tour the hits like madmen and maintain that way.

But. There's one band that isn't playing ball, at least in the traditional manner.

Metallica!

Metallica's last studio offering was a return to their old punky, "unpolished" roots. The metal giant chose to turn to their hardcore fans for support in their decline. But. People move on, and suddenly...

Enter the Metallica vs. Napster debaucle.

Hey, I'm not suggesting that some "suit" offered to set them up financially if they spoke out for major label music. I'm not suggesting that Metallica should change their name to Judassica and musically hang themselves. I'm not suggesting that it was in any way suspicious that the band was one day returning to it's "punk/alternative" roots and the next day they were standing up for all corporate music.

No.

I just think that it will be a cold day in hell when Metallica start to sell their music online and capitalize on what they once condemned.

Wait a minute... They are selling their music online?.. What the?.. LMFAO!!

Mad Love,
i220

MUSIC NEWS:

1. WILL AND JADA PINKETT SMITH MARCH AGAINST VIOLENCE: The two superstars took the walk in Philadelphia to draw attention to the fact that the city endured 380 killings last year.

2. INTERNATIONAL AIDS CONFERENCE SECURES ACTS FOR OPENING CEREMONIES: Alicia Keys, the Barenaked Ladies, Chantal Kreviazuk, Massari, Our Lady Peace, and others will play in Toronto on August 13th to kick off the annual event.

3. R.I.P. ROGER KEITH "SYD" BARRETT: The "Pink Floyd" mastermind/original singer/songwriter/guitarist passed away at the age of 60. Complications from diabetes has been listed as the cause.

4. PAVAROTTI INTENDS TO RETURN TO THE STAGE IN 2007: The world famous tenor had to postpone his farewell tour to undergo surgery for pancreatic cancer. The 70 year old singer says he's feeling better and hopes to come back with his doctor's blessing.

5. MICROSOFT PORTABLE PLAYER WITH WiFi DUE OUT BY THE HOLIDAYS: In an effort to compete with rival Apple's iPod, Microsoft's new unit will be able to let users download music without connecting to a computer and will boast a more advanced video screen.

6. KAZZAA GOING LEGIT: The shareware giant has settled with the RIAA for $100 Million and promises to go legit. At it's most popular, Kazzaa had over 4 million users worldwide and was the most downloaded software ever.

7. WHO CARES?: K-Fed finally has his bad self a gig :S He's closing this year's "Teen Choice" awards. 2 Legit 2 Quit, Hey, Hey... Pam and the Kid. Deryck and Avril. Dave and Carmen. There needs to be a wedding "lease" option for rockstars. 'Till debt do us part...
Chris Martin has dubbed Coldplay's album "Parachutes" to be "terrible music." In a seperate statement he said, "All of our fans are stupid fucks who like pretensious drivel because it's popular and I'm married to Gwyneth Paltrow!" I'm paraphrasing of course... Jennifer Lopez has been accused of being a voodoo practitioner who has hexed the likes of P Diddy, Chris Judd and Marc Anthony by her ex-husband. ? Since when did a voodoo curse make you so undeservedly famous that even I have to know who you are?.. Boo... Speaking of, "Boo"; Bobby Brown.. Bobby Brown.. Bobby... Lance Bass: I charge you with staining the reputation of the gay community and I sentance you to being found out, gay people NOT buying 'N Sync's greatest hits and marrying Carmen Electra during the finale of "Dance Fever"... Here's to the fake and irrelevent.

Gordon Lightfoot - Canadian Railroad Trilogy

There was a time in this fair land when the railroad did not run
When the wild majestic mountains stood alone against the sun
Long before the white man and long before the wheel
When the green dark forest was too silent to be real
But time has no beginnings and histry has no bounds
As to this verdant country they came from all around
They sailed upon her waterways and they walked the forests tall
And they built the mines the mills and the factories for the good of us all

And when the young mans fancy was turnin to the spring
The railroad men grew restless for to hear the hammers ring
Their minds were overflowing with the visions of their day
And many a fortune lost and won and many a debt to pay

For they looked in the future and what did they see
They saw an iron road runnin from sea to the sea
Bringin the goods to a young growin land
All up through the seaports and into their hands

Look away said they across this mighty land
From the eastern shore to the western strand
Bring in the workers and bring up the rails
We gotta lay down the tracks and tear up the trails
Open er heart let the life blood flow
Gotta get on our way cause were movin too slow

Bring in the workers and bring up the rails
Were gonna lay down the tracks and tear up the trails
Open er heart let the life blood flow
Gotta get on our way cause were movin too slow
Get on our way cause were movin too slow

Behind the blue rockies the sun is declinin
The stars, they come stealin at the close of the day
Across the wide prairie our loved ones lie sleeping
Beyond the dark oceans in a place far away

We are the navvies who work upon the railway
Swingin our hammers in the bright blazin sun
Livin on stew and drinkin bad whiskey
Bendin our old backs til the long days are done

We are the navvies who work upon the railway
Swingin our hammers in the bright blazin sun
Layin down track and buildin the bridges
Bendin our old backs til the railroad is done

So over the mountains and over the plains
Into the muskeg and into the rain
Up the st. lawrence all the way to gaspe
Swingin our hammers and drawin our pay
Drivin em in and tyin em down
Away to the bunkhouse and into the town
A dollar a day and a place for my head
A drink to the livin and a toast to the dead

Oh the song of the future has been sung
All the battles have been won
Oer the mountain tops we stand
All the world at our command
We have opened up the soil
With our teardrops and our toil

For there was a time in this fair land when the railroad did not run
When the wild majestic mountains stood alone against the sun
Long before the white man and long before the wheel
When the green dark forest was too silent to be real
When the green dark forest was too silent to be real
And many are the dead men too silent to be real

Was on another board and the topic at hand reminded me of Mr. Lightfoot here. Lookt up these lyrics and thought of a Canada where we respected our natives, shared their land, prospered with them rather than because of them.
Much Love.

Stairway to Heaven vs. November Rain, Led Zepplin vs. Guns and Roses, Jimmy Page vs. Slash

"Theres a lady whos sure
All that glitters is gold
And shes buying a stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows
If the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for.
Ooh, ooh, and shes buying a stairway to heaven."

VS.

"And when your fears subside
And shadows still remain, ohhh yeahhh
I know that you can love me
When there's no one left to blame
So never mind the darkness
We still can find a way
'Cause nothin' lasts forever
Even cold November rain"

A question that was asked on the Spearhead Message Board - whaddaya think?
