Angel's "Back in tha Daze" - The Red Rocker

A TheMusicalRevolution.Com Back in tha Day Tale
Back in 1980, some friends and I went to see "the red rocker", Sammy Hagar. I love Sammy Hagar. I feel he is one of the best guitarists ever. I saw him with Van Halen in 1986, but this (earlier) "red rocker" show was outta sight.

The crowd was jacked and it was a happenin' night. The show started and out came Sammy on the stage in a '68 Chevy convertible. The car
was bright red and so was Sammy; red hair flying and a red jumpsuit.

He started the show by playing "I Can't Drive 55" sittin' in the car. Man, we all went crazy. The joint was jumpin' - one of the best shows I've ever seen.

Sammy's been through some changes in his career, but he'll always be one of my favorites in concert. I thought he really gave Van Halen some class when he was playing with them. David Lee Roth was ok, but Sammy, he da man.
Angel of rock.

Saint Peter is checking ID's at the Pearly Gates, and first comes a Texan. "Tell me, what have you done in life?" says St. Peter.

The Texan says, "Well, I struck oil, so I became rich, but I didn't sit on my laurels--I divided all my money among my entire family in my will, so our descendants are all set for about three generations."

St. Peter says, "That's quite something. Come on in. Next!"

The second guy in line has been listening, so he says, "I struck it big in the stock market, but I didn't selfishly just provide for my own like that Texan guy. I donated five million to Save the Children."

"Wonderful!" says Saint Peter. "Come in. Who's next?"

The third guy has been listening, and says timidly with a downcast look, "Well, I only made five thousand dollars in my entire lifetime."

"Heavens!" says St. Peter. "What instrument did you play?"

Ahhh... The DLR vs. Sammy debate. To me, the Van Halens were different bands. DLRVH represented raw youth and full on rock metal! Van Hagar as my aunt loves to call them were more pop songsters exploring what they could do commercially. My recommendations for albums are 1984/5150 for the commercial hilites and Halen I/F.U.C.K. for the musical. Whadayasay?
Big Love.

i liked the early van halen with DLR, but i think that the later stuff mid-80's was way to broadwayish. seems to me that DLR always wanted to be a broadway star. saw van halen with roth and with hagar, and still prefer hagar. sammy can rock out and didn't have the attitude that roth had. i always felt DLR had his head up his ass.
just my opinion

DLRVH not commercial? Are you kiddin' me? Diamond Dave the shlockmeister? Jump was completely commercial/pop.

Hagar made Van Halen much deeper lyrically. Plus the guy rocks. DLR should be a game show host.

Lost MUCH respect for Van Halen when they dumped Sammy.

right on susan, i felt the same way. and when van halen fired DLR, then hired sammy hagar, then fired sammy hagar, then re-hired DLR, what's up with that shit? we saw DLR a few years ago, appearing with the Isley brothers, man, DLR was a joke in his overtight jumpsuit trying to do the old jumps he used to do in the 80's, it was pretty sad, but man, sammy hagar is still rocking and loooookin gooood. check out sammy's website:

I am completely split in half on this issue - and thanks for puttin' it out there Angel, BTW :D Both singers cut their teeth in the early daze. 1984 may contain "Jump" which is a hockey anthem for sure but it also contains "Panama" which, while almost as catchy is one serious piece of rawk :P And lets not forget the albums prior - which lackt commerciality but packt some serious ballz! Now the "Van Hagar" so to speak - to be honest with you, my fave Hagar is "Heavy Metal". But, F.U.C.K. is one intense funkin' album with great songs front to back. PLUS. I've seen this lineup twice and they killed both times. Hagar is inkredible live, FULL STOP! :D See - completely split.

But, on a side note. With the direction that Roth has gone since Halen, I will say this - coughahemschmuckahemcough...

A buddy of mine got to tour with the guy and told me that he is one seriously miserable sonofabitch. It's like a switch when he gets onstage???

Oh, and BTW, Eddie is a total DICK! Valerie is a saint for putting up with this prick. If it wasn't for the fact that he's soooooo talented he would be human waste. LMAO!

Big Love.

amen my brother, totally agree, van halen was all that at one time with DLR, but DLR got the big head and thought he was the whole f--king band. and yes valerie put up with way too much from eddie. when i saw van halen in 86,michael anthony, the bass guitarist was so drunk he could hardly stand up and someone in the audience passed him a quart of whiskey and the dude downed it right on stage and nearly fell over. the whole band was a bunch of drunks, they destroyed themselves. eddie looks like shit now too, he used to be "foxy" dude back in the 80's. but hagar, man the dude looks good. check out his website on the red rocker: www.sammyhagar.com
he's also invested his money well in his bars and restaurants. the dude is my age, 58 and he's still rocking hard. he was smart and got his shit together and didn't let the booze and drugs take his life away, like the van halens. sad but true, i wish them all well.

Too me it's all about Eddie Van Halen. He could put any singer in his band and it would still be a showcase for his guitar virtuosity. He ranks up there with the rock inovators (Hendrix, Beck, etc.) and whether Roth, Hager, or Pee Wee Herman are fronting the band it's still going to sound like Eddie. Just my opinion being partial as I'm a guitarist.

hey flying V good to see you here. eddie is a great guitarist, i know he mezmerized me when i saw him play back in the early 80's. what's he up to now anyway? is he still playing?

See Angel. Look what you started :P V, I think you have a real good point. I mean, you just have to look at other bands who have tried to survive singer transplants for proof. Still, Pee Wee? That's a little harsh :S LOL!! Time is telling and it seems like Sammy is the one that is still pullin' 'em in so... For current news on the band chek: http://www.vhnd.com/index.shtml

hey !220, thanks for the website on van halen, so it looks like van halen, DLR, and sammy all combined on this website, that's cool. so who is van halen's lead singer now? i sure wish MTV was still the same with all the groups video's. i really miss my MTV, I WANT MY MTV, I WANT MY MTV. it's just not the same as it used to be. this has been fun talking and debating about the history of van halen.
