ME AND MY HOOPTIE - by Brother Mike
Not so much a music story but I can almost hear ZZ Top's, "Arrested for Driving While Blind" when reading this.

I was raised in the ghetto of the Watts area of Southern California in the early 60's. Man, we was poor. My mama was a single parent with 5 kids. She worked hard at being a nurse and I had to make my own money to help out. I started working when I was 9 years old helpin' my uncle with his cleaning business. I worked for him all through high school. I saved enough money to buy me a "hooptie".
A hooptie is a "less than desireable car". Man, I was so proud of my 1951 Plymouth. Me and my brother, Robert, used to cruize all over Los Angeles in my hootpie. Hey, we weren't ashamed, we figured it's better to have a raggedy ride than a dressed up walk, yo all know what I'm talkin about?
So anyway, me and Robert were cruizin one Friday night in '64, lookin for some honies. Man, it started raining and my windshield wipers wouldn't work. It was bad (couldn't see nothin' at all). So I pulled my hooptie over to the side of the road, and being the ingenious dude that I was, at l7 years old, this is what I did to fix the problem. I opened the trunk of my car and found some twine. I cut a piece of it long enough to string it across my windshield. Man, it was just long enough. I held one piece of it on the drivers side and Robert holds the other piece. We stretched it across the windshield. Man, it worked just right as a windshield wiper. So, I pulled my side inside the car and then Robert pulled his. So we were cruizin' again, happy as can be and laughin so hard.
Man, then I saw the red lights blinking in my rear view mirror. That's right, it was "THE MAN"! He got out of his patrol car and says to me, "boy, whatcha doing here? Where's your windshield
wipers?" I said, "sorry, this is the best I could do with what I had." I couldn't believe it, but this was a cool cop. He started laughing and just gave me a fix-it ticket. He said, "hey man, now you get your wipers fixed, ya hear?" Man, we took off like a lightning bolt.
So I have fond memories of that "Hooptie" of mine. Now, hey I got me a '56 Chevy "Bel-Aire", a '68 "T-bird" and a '70 "Mustang". Still got my hoopties, but man, they all got wind shield wipers. But those were the daze back in the 60's for me.

Nas problemo gurl :) Love the hooptie story. Reminds me of the mullet days back when I used to drive my old CJ7 Jeep thru the streets of North Bay Ontario. No doors. Ragtop Down. 8Ball on the gearshift. Ladies doin' somersaults over the roll bar. those were the dayz...

"those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end, we'd sing and dance forever and a day, we'd live the life we chose, we'd fight and never lose, those were the days, oh yes, those were the days, la,la,la,la, la,la"
don't know who wrote and sang this song but i always loved it

i just have to add "my hooptie" to mike's story. my favorite hooptie was my 68 charger, just like the one in "the dukes of hazzard". man, this car had a 383 engine in it and boy could it drag. everytime i got out on the road someone would want to challage me and i would kick their butts in that car. i bought it for $200 in 1980, all it needed was a new defferential unit. the body was perfect, except the dude that owned it before me was a drunk and would drive drunk and always hit shit on the right side of the car, so it had a lot of dents on the right side. man, i wish i had never sold it, but i went into the military and didn't have the money to store it, i sold it for $700 and have been kicking myself in the ass ever since. man, that was some cool ass car.

just reminising about a 68 rambler i had back in 1977. i paid $100 for it. it ran for quit a long time, but then the rear end started going out. i couldn't afford to get it fixed, so just kept driving it till it gave up the ghost. i had to always park it so that i didn't have to go in reverse. one time i was driving my kids to the zoo. well the rambler chose to give it up and die that day. i was stuck in the middle of the road at noon time, rush hour. thankfully a very nice hippy dude helped me and pushed my rambler back home for me. we had a burial for it and i had it towed away. it was a good old car, my rambler.

Amen Sista!
The best/most reliable/most memorable hooptie that I ever had was a '87 GMC Safari if you can believe it... Now, before you get the young parent image - we used it as our band wagon. The thing was navy, sunken at the front with all tinted windows and a "Da Funk" liscence plate. That fuckin' machine carried our dreams all over the shack!! Good times.
Big Love.

!220,
your '87 GMC Safari reminds me of the old woodies, that the surfers used to use to transport their surfboards in los angeles. those woodies are worth like $l00,000 now

Ya now i got a 56 bel-aire, had since i was a teenager, a 68 t-bird, and a 70 mustang. Getting ready to sell the mustang, so i can use the money to put a new engine in the t-bird. Don't have much time, but want to get my bel-aire back on the road. Then me and Angel want to drive it across country, ya know just low riding, and chillin, taking our time cruizin down the highway. Got a good friend, named Brian, that's gonna restore my bel-aire, new paint job, make it look real classy.
love my hoopties

Mike, Angel... These dayz it's tha good ol' TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) for me - LOL!! It's so expense for the gas and insurance, nawt to mention tha parking that... But I am sad to hear that your T-Bird will be hittin' tha blocks :( Love those carz. And - the new Mustang is finally back on track as well :) Maybe these car makers are finally getting it and making cars that look "different" again.
Big Love and Happy New Year to You both.

here's another of my favorite Hooptie stories. i had this incredible 1978 duster that i had bought for $500 (back in 86.) my dad helped me get it into running order. that car was a trip, it had 9 lifetimes fur sure. first, in 1991, i got hit by a drunk driver and it creamed the backend of the car. i had to keep the trunk held down with a bungie cord after that. the frame was all screwed up and it kind of hobbled down the road. then i sold it to a dude for $100, he fixed the frame and gave it back to me, ( i couldn't believe it). this car just kept on running for me. i swear it even ran without gas, the days i had no gas money to put into it. then i met mike in 95, and he did alot of engine work on it. i still had to use the bungie cord to keep the trunk down. it was funny, whenever i ran over a bump, the trunk would bounce up and down. but i loved that car, it had so many bumper stickers on it that were my favorites. in 98 i gave it to my son and he used it for a trade in for a new car. man, that old duster was the bomb, just kept on truckin, i always think of it in the "heaven of old and forgotten cars", resting and just chillin.

thought i'd add another hooptie story, this one is dedicated to my man, mike. when i met mike, i wasn't in too good of shape, i had been hit by a drunk driver, and not only was my car f--ked up, but so was my body and spirit. anyway, this kind dude, brother mike, took me and my car in. as i've said in another hooptie story about my 76 duster, i gave it to my son. well, this left me without a car. so mike, in one day, put a new engine in his 70 mustang, and gave it to me. man, i loved driving that car. it is hot. it cruizes so good and i could kick ass in it when someone wanted to race me. i was in college then, and everytime i would come into the parking lot, the younger students would gather round and look at it. it needs a paint job, but the bodies still in great shape and the 70 mustang was a hot lookin car. so anyway, i loves my man and i loves the mustang he put together for me.
