Sat.Aug.7/04 - Calgary/High River, AB.
Corporate Cash Cow... Independent Musician Cross Canada Tour (Pt 1) Western Canada.

4.5, 4, 3.5, 3, 2.5, 2, 1.5, 1, .5K to High River, make sure you don't miss this!
Yesterday's bedtime was, well, uhm, today at 7 AM so today doesn't start until 2:30 PM. A little laundry is in order and a stop over at our favorite restaurant Van's (3 trips make it an official '04 tour stop). We barely have time to check in with our hosts before we have to be off to High River for the night's gig.
High River is about 50 or so kilometres south of the big city of Calgary, not that you could possibly miss it as it is diligently signposted every .5K starting about 10K out :D. Unfortunately, the bar isn't as easy to find. Maybe I should've written down the right address? I make a mental note for next time, *sheepish grin*. The search turns out to be worth it. When we arrive, Dudley's Pub is a bustlin'!
The place is pop'hoppin', the gear is already set up and ready to go, Tadd and Crystal (the bar staff) are wicked accomodatin' and Deb, the bar owner already has the party in full effect. I slap myself in the face and ask if they've got the long necks on ice and cocktail sammy's I asked for in my dressing room - J.K. - LOL!! One ice cream l8er (Evelyn's home made across the road :P), a brief warm up (the voice has managed to recover), a wicked setlist concocted and *bang* the show's ready to begin.
Throughout the night, I end up doing 3 sets. The first two are to a packt house, the last is to a thinning but appreciative crowd. Shortly into the first set Theresa, Paul, Max, Kevin and Janna show up - instant posse. At one point a younger lady requests some "Sublime". The crowd (with a little help from yours truly) harrases her to sing but she bows out. Never one to shy away from a challenge, I oblige. Somehow, I manage to score a free meal - ahh the life :) Deb, the owner buys tha posse a shot each. Overall the show turns out to be a slammin' success!
You kno it's been a good night when the bar owner/bookee can barely stand to bid you farewell (they kno how to partay in High River). The posse seems pleased and the festivities continue later on at P&T's out back by tha fire. Alas, all is short lived and the night ends up with myself and Paul chewin' the fat on the back porch. Alberta will always hold a special place in my heart as a province that knows how to drink, party to tha acoustic music and treat their talent with respect and the occasional shot of booze.
Next diary - Calgary to Kelowna and the first time this city boy witnesses the grandeur that is mountains. REAL Mountains!

Gear For The Independent Solo Acoustic Musician (that you can afford)
Mackie DFX6 6 Channel Integrated Live Sound Mixer: 3 bills+ Canadian. http://www.mackie.com/products/dfx6/
If you have acquired a piece of gear that you are particularly fond of - share by Commenting. Copyright your music ideas, not your gear choices.
Note: The above gear took me years to acquire; it is NOT for sale. I am sharing this information with other musicians to help them in their search. I have no sponsers.
This particular piece of gear has taken me about a year and a half to decide on - obsessive huh? I need a mixer that is affordable (duh), durable, lightweight (8lbs), and compact with all the built ins necessary. I'm on foot. I need a piece 'o gear that's travel with me on da BUS man! This is what I've come up with.
Extras: 5 band master EQ with individual channel shelf EQs (80hz & 12K).
32 bit built in digital effects. I HATE digital reverb but this one's... OK.
Master mute button that lets the "CD in" through for set breaks.
4 Balanced Mic Ins, 2 with inserts :)
Etc... Check the Mackie site for more: http://www.mackie.com/

utopia by Angel
utopia to me would be
smoking a "j" with the
musical angels of rock
jimi hendrix, janis joplin, john lennon,
george harrison,
evis presley, sam cooke
jim morrison, john lee hooker,
michael hutchence, luther vandross,
roy orbison,
and all the other's that gave their
hearts and souls to entertain
the world
wouldn't it be cool to lay by the river
of life
and listen to the stories these greats
could lay on us?
then there would be the biggest concert
of all time and the heavens would open
up and there would be peace on earth
what a mighty fine time that would be!!!

TIRED OF THE SHIT by Angel
so tired of people trying to push me around
treating me like i don't belong
actin like i'm some kind of clown
calling me a dumb blond
just cause i'm a peace maker
don't forget i'm a earth shaker
i'll walk right over the top of your ass
if you push me too far
abusing me ain't gonna get it
i been around along time
learned how to stand against the wind
this here tree got some strong roots
just try tipping me over
ain't gonna happen
so let it go
take your anger somewhere else
leave me in peace

THEMUSICALREVOLUTION.COM THIS MONTH: This month in the revolution was admittedly a slow one. I must confess that I was out gallivanting across the east of this fine country of ours on the second leg of the "Independent Musician Cross Canada Tour". And while my Corporate Cash Cow (solo acoustic musician) project has benefited from the extra attention so has the membership of this fine revolution. I'd like to acknowledge 28 new members from across the east. Welcome to our little take over. Peace and well being.
EDITORIAL: And... so it's done. The "Independent Musician Cross Canada Tour"; in its entirety. Over 30 cities/towns, 20 gigs, 40 days in two summers - one lifelong dream accomplished! I'm not gonna feign that this wasn't in anyway a personal challenge. I don't want to pretend that it was any kind of real sacrifice. But. I just want to say that I am especially proud that I've been able to accomplish this feat. It is proof that we do not need to play the corporate game to be professional traveling musicians. I consider this tour as a trail blazing effort for myself. The contacts and experience that I have attained over the last two years are not going to go to waste. I fully intend to document the whole process in its entirety in mark II of this site with the hopes that at the very least it will serve as a testament to the power of good music and where it can take one (actually 2) lucky/trusting people. Finally, thanks to every bar booking agent that gave this idea a chance. A few treated it with reverence, communicated it's importance to their clientele and the shows that transpired were stuff of legend. Thanks to the friends and family who took us in – without your support this would have been an impossibility for us. And thanks to all who have read and will read this documentation – now it's your turn. Revolutionize yourself first.
Big Love, i220
NEWS:
1. FILE SHARERS WORLDWIDE BEWARE: The British Phonographic Industry has recently sued 90 illegal file sharers worldwide. The Recording Industry Association of America documents the total number of actions the world over as 11,000. The authorities in 12 different countries have seized computers in hopes of "discouraging" the continuation of shareware.
2. LIVE 8 PLAYS OUT TO MUSIC FANS ON 4 CONTINENTS: Music Fans from G8 Countries (Canada, the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Russia plus South Africa, and a 10th show featuring all African artists held in southwest England) all turned out to support a united effort to pressure the G8 summit (being held in Scotland, early July) to reduce debt and increase aid to all 3rd world countries. It is estimated that close to a million people were on hand for the concerts and that over 85 % of the world had access to the shows via television, radio or internet broadcast of the monumentous event.
3. BONO DUBS LIVE 8 A SUCCESS: According to the U2 frontman and activist the worldwide concert event helped push African aid to the top of the agenda at the G8 summit held in Scotland; early July. World leaders pledged to double aid to the tune of $50 billion US. Whether the promise is kept remains to be seen.
4. CHARITY DANCE EVENT CANCELLED DUE TO LONDON BOMBINGS: The cost of extra security was cited as the reason for axing the "Tribal Gathering" festival which was to be held in Luton in aid of Sudan relief.
5. SONY/BMG SETTLE IN PAYOLA SCANDAL: The record label has agreed to pay US$10 million for offering radio station employees anything from vacations to stereo equipment in order to secure radio play for their artists. The money will go to New York state not-for-profit music programs.
6. WHO CARES? – Rapper Eve is "devastated" at having a homemade sex tape broadcast over the internet. The 30 second clip apparently didn't show nearly enough bush, JK… The Osbournes' - over - that’s fuckin' shitty man. A real fuckin' loss for television, Fuck,.. fuck,.. Uuhhhh…. Ahm…. Fuck!.. Get ready! The Spice Girls are coming back. Woooooohhh. Well, they're releasing a greatest hits album at least. And they're not actually meeting but rather recording separate vocals wherever each one may be living at the moment. Which is all across the globe. No word whether they actually talk any more, but, it's gonna be huge… honest… Eminem's gonna retire! I've discovered a way to perform the American national anthem by farting into a sousaphone. It's all how you clench your butt cheeks. :S Yeah right!.. CBGBs may close down. Oh No! But if YOU just send cheque or money order to… LOL! Everybody's got their pockets open. Here's to filling the empty ones. Peace.
