THEMUSICALREVOLUTION.COM THIS MONTH: This month in the revolution was admittedly a slow one. I must confess that I was out gallivanting across the east of this fine country of ours on the second leg of the "Independent Musician Cross Canada Tour". And while my Corporate Cash Cow (solo acoustic musician) project has benefited from the extra attention so has the membership of this fine revolution. I'd like to acknowledge 28 new members from across the east. Welcome to our little take over. Peace and well being.
EDITORIAL: And... so it's done. The "Independent Musician Cross Canada Tour"; in its entirety. Over 30 cities/towns, 20 gigs, 40 days in two summers - one lifelong dream accomplished! I'm not gonna feign that this wasn't in anyway a personal challenge. I don't want to pretend that it was any kind of real sacrifice. But. I just want to say that I am especially proud that I've been able to accomplish this feat. It is proof that we do not need to play the corporate game to be professional traveling musicians. I consider this tour as a trail blazing effort for myself. The contacts and experience that I have attained over the last two years are not going to go to waste. I fully intend to document the whole process in its entirety in mark II of this site with the hopes that at the very least it will serve as a testament to the power of good music and where it can take one (actually 2) lucky/trusting people. Finally, thanks to every bar booking agent that gave this idea a chance. A few treated it with reverence, communicated it's importance to their clientele and the shows that transpired were stuff of legend. Thanks to the friends and family who took us in – without your support this would have been an impossibility for us. And thanks to all who have read and will read this documentation – now it's your turn. Revolutionize yourself first.
Big Love, i220
NEWS:
1. FILE SHARERS WORLDWIDE BEWARE: The British Phonographic Industry has recently sued 90 illegal file sharers worldwide. The Recording Industry Association of America documents the total number of actions the world over as 11,000. The authorities in 12 different countries have seized computers in hopes of "discouraging" the continuation of shareware.
2. LIVE 8 PLAYS OUT TO MUSIC FANS ON 4 CONTINENTS: Music Fans from G8 Countries (Canada, the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Russia plus South Africa, and a 10th show featuring all African artists held in southwest England) all turned out to support a united effort to pressure the G8 summit (being held in Scotland, early July) to reduce debt and increase aid to all 3rd world countries. It is estimated that close to a million people were on hand for the concerts and that over 85 % of the world had access to the shows via television, radio or internet broadcast of the monumentous event.
3. BONO DUBS LIVE 8 A SUCCESS: According to the U2 frontman and activist the worldwide concert event helped push African aid to the top of the agenda at the G8 summit held in Scotland; early July. World leaders pledged to double aid to the tune of $50 billion US. Whether the promise is kept remains to be seen.
4. CHARITY DANCE EVENT CANCELLED DUE TO LONDON BOMBINGS: The cost of extra security was cited as the reason for axing the "Tribal Gathering" festival which was to be held in Luton in aid of Sudan relief.
5. SONY/BMG SETTLE IN PAYOLA SCANDAL: The record label has agreed to pay US$10 million for offering radio station employees anything from vacations to stereo equipment in order to secure radio play for their artists. The money will go to New York state not-for-profit music programs.
6. WHO CARES? – Rapper Eve is "devastated" at having a homemade sex tape broadcast over the internet. The 30 second clip apparently didn't show nearly enough bush, JK… The Osbournes' - over - that’s fuckin' shitty man. A real fuckin' loss for television, Fuck,.. fuck,.. Uuhhhh…. Ahm…. Fuck!.. Get ready! The Spice Girls are coming back. Woooooohhh. Well, they're releasing a greatest hits album at least. And they're not actually meeting but rather recording separate vocals wherever each one may be living at the moment. Which is all across the globe. No word whether they actually talk any more, but, it's gonna be huge… honest… Eminem's gonna retire! I've discovered a way to perform the American national anthem by farting into a sousaphone. It's all how you clench your butt cheeks. :S Yeah right!.. CBGBs may close down. Oh No! But if YOU just send cheque or money order to… LOL! Everybody's got their pockets open. Here's to filling the empty ones. Peace.

Below is an email a friend sent to me and I wanted to share it with all of you. Please watch this videoclip that is linked below. This is some pretty scare shit for anyone that attends live music events. Please pass this on to anyone and everyone!!!!!
I could only link to the first video clip, but holy shit, it was more than
enough. check it out. something has to be done. i received this in my
burning man update email today.
send this to anyone you think would care...
here is a clip from someone who attended..

here is the clip from the news...

Nick was one of the musicians at the event, here is what he
had to say....
"Last night, I was booked to play an event about an hour outside of
Salt Lake City, Utah. The hype behind this show was huge, they presold
700 tickets and they expected up to 3,000 people total. The promoters
did an amazing job with the show.. they even made slipmats with the
flyers on them to promote in local shops. So, we got to the show around
11:15 or so and it was really cool. It was all outdoors, in a valley
surrounded by huge mountains. They had an amazing light show flashing
on to a mountain behind the site, the sound was booming, the crowd was
about 1500 people thick and everything just seemed too good to be true
really. Well...At about 11:30 or so, I was standing behind the stage
talking with someone when I noticed a helicopter pulling over one of
the mountain tops. I jokingly said "Oh look, here comes big brother" to
the person I was with. I wasn't far off.
The helicopter dipped lower and lower and started shining its lights on
the crowd. I was kind of in awe and just sat and watched this thing
circle us for a minute. As I looked back towards the crowd I saw a guy
dressed in camoflauge walking by, toting an assault rifle. At this
point, everyone was fully aware of what was going on . A few "troops"
rushed the stage and cut the sound off and started yelling that
everyone "get the F out of here or go to jail". This is where it got
really sticky. No one resisted. That's for sure. They had police dogs
raiding the crowd of people and I saw a dog signal out a guy who
obviously had some drugs on him. The soldiers attacked the guy (4 of
them on 1), and kicked him a few times in the ribs and had their knees
in his back and sides. As they were cuffing him, there was about 1000
kids trying to leave in the backdrop, peacefully. Next thing I know, A
can of fucking TEAR GAS is launched into the crowd. People are running
and screaming at this point. Girls are crying, guys are cussing... bad
scene. Now, this is all I saw with my own eyes, but I heard plenty of
other accounts of the night. Now this isnt gossip I heard from some
candy raver, these are instances cited straight out of the promoters
mouth..-
One of the promoters friends (a very small female) was attacked by one
of the police dogs. As she struggled to get away from it, the police
tackled her. 3 grown men proceeded to KICK HER IN THE STOMACH.- The
police confiscated 3 video tapes in total. People were trying to
document what was happening out there. The police saw one guy filming
and ran after him, tackled him and his camera fell, and luckily.. his
friend grabbed it and ran and got away. priceless footage. That's not
all though. Out of 1,500 people, there's sure to be more footage.- The
police were rounding up the staff of the party and the main promoter
went up to them with the permit for the show and said "here, I have the
permit." The police then said, "no you don't" and ripped the permit out
of his hand. Then, they put an assault rifle to his forehead and said
"get the F out of here right now."Now.. let's get the facts straight
here. This event was 100% legal. They had every permit the city told
them they needed. They had a 2 MILLION DOLLAR insurance policy for the
event. They had liscenced security guards at the gates confiscating any
alcohol or drugs found upon entry (yes, they searched every car on the
way in). Oh, I suppose I should mention that they arrested all the
security guards for possession.
Oh another interesting fact.. the police did not have a warrant. The
owner of the land already has a lawsuit against the city for something
similar. A few months ago, she rented her land for a party and the
police raided that as well. And catch this, the police forced her to
LEAVE HER OWN PERSONAL PROPERTY. That's right. They didnt arrest her,
but made her leave her own property!!!Don't get it twisted, this is all
going down in probably THE most conservative state in the USA. And this
is scary.. a gross violation of our civil liberties. The police wanted
this party shut down, so they made it happen. Even though everything
about this event was legal. The promoters spent over $ 20,000 on this
show and did everything they had to to make it legit, only to have it
taken away from them by a group of radical neo-con's with an
agenda. This was one of the scariest things I have ever witnessed in
person.
I can't even begin to describe how surreal it was. Helicopters, assault
rifles, tear gas, camoflauge-wearing soldiers.... why? Was that really
necessary? This needs to be big news across the USofA. At least in our
music scene (edm as a whole)... this could happen to any of us at any
time. When we're losing the right to gather peacefully, we're also
letting the police set a standard of what we can get away with. And I
think that's BULLSHIT!The system fucked up last night... They broke up
a party that was 100% legal and they physically hurt a lot of people
there at the same time. The promoters already have 6 lawsuits ready to
file with their lawyers and the ACLU is already involved.I'm sure some
pictures (and hopefully some video) will surface soon. I'll make sure
to post them up here on 404, so you can see the Police State of America
at work."
But here's the story as told by Salt Lake City Tribune:
About 60 people were arrested Saturday night when police officers busted an illegal rave in Spanish Fork Canyon. Those arrested were cited on a variety of charges including the possession of illegal narcotics, weapons violations, DUI, illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor, disorderly conduct, assaulting a police officer and drug distribution.
"The Sheriff's Office will investigate and look into and find an illegal mass gathering going on, we will take the appropriate action to stop the party at that time," Gilbert said.
Investigators learned that no permit had been requested for a mass gathering which requires a bond and Utah County Commission approval for groups larger than 250, said Gilbert. Police learned around noon Saturday that the rave would be held in the Diamond Fork area of Spanish Fork Canyon and assembled about 90 officers from several agencies to enforce crowd control.
Undercover officers filtered into the party when the doors opened about 9 p.m. By 11:30 p.m. police confirmed that more than 250 people were in attendance and stormed the party. During their two hours at the DJ-driven dance party, undercover officers had observed a multitude of illegal activities including the sale and consumption of drugs such as cocaine, ecstacy, alcohol, methamphetamine and marijuana.
Notice the differing reports about the required permits? I'm wondering what the truth is here. Did the media upsell the drugs of a rave (cause c'mon, it was a rave) and lie about required permits in order to negate the human rights violations in the story? Or did the DJ who witnessed the event not have his facts straight? Anyone out there have more information? I haven't been able to find anything too interesting in the online news (shocker) so I'm hoping someone from MFA has the deets...
