The "Back In The Day Tales" Category

Tales of concerts, celebrity encounters, musical experiences, gigs, CDs, DVDs, etc... gone by. We wanna hear 'bout it!

Man, I remember this time I was at "Zaphod Beeblebrox" or was it "The Restaurant at the End of Finch and Don Mills"? Anyway, I actually met Zaphod Beeblebrox*, no word of a lie! He was just sitting at the bar casually drinking a Pan Galactic Gargleblaster, Woah! So I walk up to him and say something stupid like, "I bet you're the only cat who can truly satisfy the Olsen twins..." You know, because of his two heads... Is this mic on? Well, I think that's what I said. I was pretty drunk...

Well, anyone who knows me knows that I have had the opportunity to meet many very cool musicians. Having a sister in the business makes it very easy to meet a lot of really cool people. I have two stories that I would like to share with you.

1) I was visiting my sister here in Vancouver. It was about 4 years ago. Sloan happened to be playing a show here. At this point in my sister's career she had become friends with Sloan. So, not only were we on the guest list but, we had after show passes as well. Sloan was playing at the Vogue Theatre.

My sister and I were going to grab some seats on the balcony level. We get to the top of the stairs and my sisters tells me that we'll wait till the end of the song to take a seat. Next thing we knew, the power triping security guy, with his big flash light told us to take a seat. My sister explained to him that theatre etiquette was to wait for the song to be done. He didn't care, got right in my sisters face and said, "Can you see now?"

To avoid anymore conflict with this power tripping meathead we took our seat. After the show we were waiting in the lobby with our passes on and the same security guy comes down the stairs. He sees us and sees are passes and is a total jerk. "So, are you excited that you get to see them all up close now?" he said in a very cocky tone.

My sister and I just blew him off. "Yeah whatever!"

Seconds later Chris Murphy comes bounding out the stage door. Sees my sister and is so happy to see her. "MARY!!!!!" he says and gives her a huge hug. "I'm so glad you made it to the show."

The sercurity meathead had seen the whole thing. It was priceless. I'm sure that guy will think twice before he trys a power trip again.
Then I got to hang out with the whole band and ended up going for drinks with Pat and my sister. I found out how they came up with the name Sloan. Not a fascinating story, but and interesting one. Very cool experience and fun just hanging out with the band.

2)This summer I got to meet Hawkesly Workman. I really love his music. And him. :)

My roommates are in a band called Stabilo. Some of you may have heard of them. They are up and comming. Lots of great things happening with them.

In July they played a show with Sloan, 54-40 and Hawkesly Workmen. After Sloan played, Karl (bass player of Stabilo) came and found myself and my other roommate. We decided that we were going to try and get in to the VIP room. He said they had been pretty slack on the security to the VIP room. It was pretty easy. Karl and his wife both had passes and they didn't care to see if my roommate and I had passes. We just pretended like we did. I couldn't believe how easy it was. I guess it's true what they say, just look like you belong there.

While we were hanging out, Jesse (lead vocals and guitar player for Stabilo) was talking to Hawkesly. My perfect opportunity to meet him. I walked over and Jesse puts his arm around me and asks me how I was doing?
I said, "I'm doing good Jesse but, I want to talk to this man right here." And I point at Hawkesly.

I then had a really great conversation with Hawkesly. I told him about the first time I had seen him play at a COCA Conference. We talked about that for while. We talked about what I was doing in Vancouver. It was very cool.

My roommates still bug me about how I was flirting with Hawkesly. Hey at least I had the balls to go and talk to him, so to speak.

I have many many more interesting celebertiy? meetings. Maybe you'll get to hear some more....

beautiful canada memories of 1977:
the only time i've been to canada was in 1977. i had ridden the greyhound bus all the way from pocatello idaho to two harbours minnesota, to visit relatives. man, that was a long ass trip. that was when pres. carter opened up the bus lines, cause we had a gas crisis and gas went up, not like it is today, but anyway, i digress, you could ride the greyhound anywhere in the united states round trip, for $50.00, can you believe that. i had my youngest son with me, he was a rambunctious 2 years old. man that trip took 3 long ass days. but i met some cool ass people on the way, back then you could smoke a doobie, depending on the kindness of the driver, if you sat in the back rows of the bus. man, i met some cool peeps that shared some "j's" with me and we sang and told stories all the way.

so i wanted to go to canada so bad. my sister, her husband and their kids and me and my baby all took a trip to the canadian border, you know i'd have to get out a map to even know where we were. lake superior side i guess. anyway, we took a pic-nic and went for the day. man, what a glorious day. i will have to see if i can find the pics. i was feeling so good and high. what beautiful country. we went swimming in these falls and everyone was swimming nude. i have pics of my little boy so cute playing in the water. mellow people i met that day. i didn't want to go back to the states. back then you only had to have $500 and prove it, to stay in canada. i was a poor single mother of three and no way could get the $500 together, but it's been 29 years now and i still want to go to my beautiful canada and live. mike and i been talking about a train trip there when we retire. my dad, when he was retired used to just buy a ticket anywhere on the amtrak train and ride to canada and spend the night and then come back to cally. anyway, just thought i'd reminise some. if we ever do make a trip i wanna meet some special peeps i have met over the inter-net. my girlfriend, caito, from stayhuman, and !220 (matt) from www.themusicalrevolution.com and of course i wanna meet our gracious host, cisco. (from http://sixties.3site.ca) would be a rockin trip, that's fur sure.

i just figured out why you canadians are so mellow and peace loving. your country has always been a neutral country, while america was built on lies, deception and wars. i am so tired of all the anger, hatred and abuse in america. even the websites and message boards are filled with hate, racism, ect. anyway i write on two of the mellowist canadian websites and i love it. you guys rock, please tell us yanks, what is your secret?

Roger Waters
Body: Posted: Wed Oct 11, 2006 1:14 pm Post subject: roger waters

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

man, my son rhom and i saw roger waters last night. man, what can i say, the dude still has it, the show was amazing. roger waters filled that place and there was still traffic way out on the freeway waiting to get in. he started the show right at 8pm and played for about 3 solid hours. in my mind, i feel like i have seen the original Pink Floyd, cause roger waters is Pink floyd. his voice is incredible, he looks outrageous and his band is tight. he had a black female singer that blew the crowd away, i haven't heard a voice like that since janis joplin, what an extrodinary night. i have waited since 1973 to see pink floyd and man it was worth the wait. the crowd was a real mixture of young people to my age group and even older. i saw some peeps there that looked like they were in their 70's, right on. cool night and man, i'm so happy my son got me my ticket for my birthday, hey 59 is alright with me as long as i can keep going to concerts with the peeps i love, have some good bud and rock out
